It's strange to think that the only forms of technology in my room is my television and my Playstation 3 yet i get all i need entertainment wise through my playstation 3.
About 5-10 years ago my room was full of differnet seperate forms of technology that can all be now done on my quite small but ugly looking PS3 when you consider everything it does it is very small.I do everything on my PS3, play games on or offline, watch DVD's including blu-ray, store music and photos, surf the net going on any sites and can also watch TV on BBC Iplayer and all th others. There is not alot tecnology wise that you can't do on this magnificent peice of technology except for making phone calls but i might just be wrong about that one.
My point being how Sony a major firm being the fifth largest media conglemarate in the world and one of the leaders in the game console and other industries have converged all these different technologies into one device to increase their revenue and broaden there market. This can also be seen by Apple with all their devices such as the Ipod, Imac, Ipad, Macbook and last but not least the Iphone they have created device for all platforms making customers including me stay with apple as i said before apple are broading their market. Im thinking soon there will defo be an ITV but there would be a problem with calling it that wouldnt there so dont know what they would call it. Sony also owns Columbia Pictures so the create films put them out on DVD's then you watch the blu ray if that on your Sony PS3 this making sony get to us at all different opportunities across a wide rang of different medias. Sony also have a record label so they have a chance to get across through games, music and films. This realtes to what Henry Jenkins is explaining when he says "convergence is being shaped top-down by the decisions being made by massive media conglomerates who have controlling interest across all possible media systems and who enjoy the power to insure that their content circulates globally."
Apple and Sony and microsoft have made my lifes and others much easier and by converging all these tecnologies to on device amazing if you ask me and my room no longer looks like a small currys. But what am i doing as i write this listening to music on none other than my Ipod and taking short breaks to nip on my facebook using the app installed on my pod and if i was at home i would probably have the PS3 on playing a game of FIFA.
